FLEXIBLE FIBER ELECTRODES IN A COMPLETELY SEALED CASE ELIMINATE MEMORY EFFECTS, PLATE IMBALANCE, AND WATER LOSS
FNC IS TRULY MAINTENANCE FREE!

The FNC cell incorporates several features that provide dramatic advancements in battery technology.
The heart of FNC, the flexible fiber electrodes, have virtually eliminated the failure mechanisms commonly found in other battery systems. Uniquely arranged in a vacuum-sealed case, the effects of memory, plate Imbalance and water loss have been eliminated. In the FNC cell, the negative electrode consists of two plates separated by a third plate of non-impregnated nickel plated fiber. This third plate allows the oxygen produced during charging to rapidly recombine. Sufficient recombination surface is provided to accommodate all the oxygen up to a 2C overcharge rate.
This principle of operation makes it possible to maintain a partial vacuum in the cell, even during overcharge. The innovative combination of fiber plates, recombination plates, and vacuum-sealed cell cases results in several other significant advantages.
OTHER ADVANTAGES
ZERO MAINTENANCE LOWERS YOUR COST OF OWNERSHIP
The Acme Aerospace Zero-Maintenance sealed Fiber Nickel Cadmium (FNC) battery is the only true maintenance free battery. Removal from the aircraft is eliminated because sealed FNC batteries need no water replenishment. Capacity verification checks are a simple on-board procedure performed at the operator's discretion.
REDUCED BATTERY INVENTORY
UP TO 4 TIMES LONGER LIFE
FNC Batteries last up to 4 times longer than conventional vented Nickel-Cadmium (NiCd) batteries, and up to 10 times longer than lead-acid batteries.
MORE POWER PER POUND
FNC offers exceptional high power density much less weight and size for a given load of output. The high voltage output also yields cooler APU starts, increasing the longevity of your hot section components.
LOW WEIGHT
The FNC sealed-cell eliminates the need for heavy, stainless steel battery containers required to contain free electrolyte from vented cells.
EXPLOSION PROOF
Rapid recombination prevents the build-up of ignitable gas mixtures in the cell, eliminating the need for battery venting and electrolyte catch basins.
ENHANCED SAFETY
No sudden failures, no thermal runaways, and no corrosive liquids or gases.
RAPID CHARGING
FNC high-rate cells will accept initial charging rates as high as 4C for faster charge after takeoff.
DESIGN FLEXIBILITY
Electrodes may be optimized for low rate high energy density, or extremely high-rate applications.
SHELF LIFE
FNC Cells can be stored in excess of five years without special handling or storage requirements.
ELECTRODE DESIGN
Fiber structured electrodes provide:
- Very Long Service Life.
- The elasticity of the electrode material provides high cycle life (over 12,000 cycles at 30%DOD).
- Operating temperatures range from -40o C to + 60o C.
- Excellent charge and discharge characteristics as low as 40o C.
- Mechanically robust extremely high resistance to shock and vibration.
REPLACE VENTED Ni-CADs with FNC and:
- Eliminate costly hazardous material shipping requirements and associated cost.
- Simplify storage requirements.
- Install and operate the battery in any position.
- Ability to fly in any orientation, including upside down.
REPLACE VALVE REGULATED LEAD ACID BATTERIES WITH FNC AND:
- Gain superior capability over a broad range of temperature, shock and vibration conditions.
- Eliminate costly in-storage charging requirements
- Reduce weight and improve power capability.
- Eliminate hazardous gases.
- Increased cycle life in excess of 10 to 1.
- Eliminate battery loss from complete discharge (accidental and emergency).
- Reduce cost of ownership.
CHARGING
The preferred charging method is constant current with a voltage limit of 1.55 volts per cell as shown in the figure below. A change in cell temperature is normally used to control charging.
DISCHARGE
FNC technology provides a wide range of discharge capabilities. An example of the high-rate discharge capability of a 47 ah cell is shown below. Additional test and performance date is available upon request.
